Handyman in Kinvara, 2478, NSW
I’ve just moved into a hinterland rental behind Lennox and want to turn the covered deck into a secure outdoor area for my indoor cats. I’ve already bought the cat netting, tension wire, turnbuckles, cable ties and a heavier-duty mesh skirt material for the lower section, but need someone to install it. As it’s a rental, it will be mostly cable ties, cutting the netting to size etc.
The aim is to create an escape-proof enclosure for the cats and to block snakes and other wildlife from getting in.
You’ll be attaching netting across three vertical sides plus a ceiling section, cutting each panel to size and securing it tightly to the existing timber frame. Everything needs to be neat, well-tensioned and gap-free.
Dimensions
End sections: approx 2.5 m wide × 3 m high
Front section: approx 7.5 m long
Ceiling panel: approx 7.5 m × 2.5 m
Lower skirt: heavier mesh covering the bottom 40 cm along all open sides (to make this area more resistant to snakes pushing against it)
Job details
Each panel needs to be cut to size and attached with tension wire and ties
The lower 40 cm uses the thicker mesh to help prevent snakes from entering
One end of the deck can’t use the existing end posts because that’s the access point to the house, so that section needs a tidy solution that allows access but still seals cleanly when in place
The ceiling sheet runs underneath the rafters and needs to meet the side panels without gaps
There’s a gap between the deck roof and the main house; I’ve got foam insulation tubing to fill and seal this
The owner has approved using a few screws for the tension wire, but the enclosure should be mostly removable, so the main fixings will be cable ties rather than permanent hardware.
Extra small task
There are a couple of small plastic awnings fixed to the front of the deck that need to be unscrewed and removed before installation begins.
What I’m after
Someone experienced with outdoor screening, netting or similar materials — basically someone who’s comfortable creating clean edges, tensioning wire properly and making the structure tight so there are no obvious entry points for animals.
I can help hold sections in place. Parking and access are easy, and the deck is fully covered.
