What Does A Professional Plasterer Do?

Plasterers are skilled tradespeople who specialise in applying plaster to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. Their primary tasks include:

  • Surface Preparation: They prepare surfaces by cleaning, smoothening, and sometimes applying a base coat to ensure a proper bonding surface for the plaster.

  • Plaster Application: They apply plaster to walls and ceilings, using various techniques such as troweling, floating, and skimming to achieve the desired finish.

  • Repair and Restoration: Professional plasterers often repair damaged or deteriorated plaster, including filling cracks, holes, or damaged areas. They might also restore historical plasterwork.

  • Specialized Finishes: They are skilled in creating different textures and finishes, including smooth, textured, or decorative plasterwork, depending on the desired aesthetics.

  • Understanding Materials: A professional plasterer understands various types of plaster materials, their properties, and which type is suitable for specific applications.

  • Quality Control: They ensure the plaster is applied evenly and smoothly, meeting quality standards and following safety regulations.

  • Collaboration: In some cases, plasterers may collaborate with other professionals, such as painters or decorators, to ensure the final appearance meets the client's expectations.

Overall, professional plasterers play a crucial role in the construction and renovation of buildings, contributing to both the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the interior spaces. Once all your plastering repairs are complete, you might want to get a painter to add a new layer of paint to the fixed walls.

  • Lime Plaster: Made from a mixture of sand, water, and lime, this traditional plaster is known for its breathability and flexibility. It's suitable for historical buildings and eco-friendly projects.

  • Polished Plaster: Polished plaster is a type of wall and ceiling plaster finish made from natural lime plaster. Skilled plasterers apply it in several layers using a trowel.

  • Cement Plaster: Comprising cement, sand, and water, this type of plaster is highly durable and used for exterior surfaces or areas requiring more strength and resistance.

  • Clay Plaster: Often used for natural and eco-friendly construction, clay plaster is breathable and offers good thermal and moisture-regulating properties.

  • Specialty Plaster Mixes: Some plasterers use specialized mixes, which may include additives to enhance properties like adhesion, flexibility, or fire resistance.

Techniques

  • Preparation of Surfaces: This involves cleaning the surface, removing debris, repairing cracks, and applying primers to ensure the plaster adheres properly.

  • Application Techniques: Plaster is applied manually using trowels, providing a more personalized touch and flexibility. Utilizing machines to spray plaster onto surfaces, which can be quicker for larger areas but requires skill for an even finish.

  • Skimming: The process of applying a thin layer of finishing plaster to create a smooth and level surface. Skimming is commonly used to cover imperfections or provide a polished look.

  • Texturing: Plasterers can create various textures by manipulating the plaster using tools, such as brushes, sponges, or combs, to achieve unique designs or patterns.

  • Finishing and Polishing: Once the plaster has dried, it's polished to achieve the desired smoothness or texture, ensuring a professional and visually appealing result.

  • Restoration and Repair: Plasterers also specialize in restoring old or damaged plaster, which may involve carefully removing damaged sections and reapplying plaster for a seamless finish.

Each of these materials and techniques plays a crucial role in achieving the desired finish and durability in plastering work. Professional plasterers possess expertise in selecting the right materials and employing suitable techniques based on the specific requirements of a project.

1. Square off around kitchen windows as per attached render, (which is NOT to scale) as old architraves will be taken off and not replaced. Approx.5.3 lineal metres 2. Install approx. 3.75 metres new cornice over bulkhead after overhead cabinets are installed. 3. Fill 2 x holes left in kitchen by light and exhaust fan, and 1 x very small hole in wall of toilet where water inlet will be moved slightly. 4. Fill 5 x 16cm holes in ceiling - dowlights will be removed first - in readiness for painting and redrilling of smaller holes, so that extension plates are not needed. (It would be prefereable to me if hole filling (except toilet) could be done on either 14th, 15th, 16th or 18th October first, so I can paint the ceiling while the kitchen is out, and the squaring off of the windows and the cornicing and small patch in the toilet done after the kitchen has been installed the following week). 5. Fill 2 x small holes in laundry where taps will be removed.
