Major Benefits Of Timber Decking

Your preferences for deck design and budget will determine which wood is best for your deck and what benefits you can get. For outdoor areas, timber decking provides several attractive and practical benefits. The following are some main advantages:

Organic Visual Appeal

Any outside space looks natural, cosy, and welcoming with timber decking. Wood's rich textures and grains give it a timeless, classic look that complements both conventional and modern architectural designs. Wood can be painted or stained to blend in with the surroundings, improving the room's aesthetic appeal.

Sturdiness and Extended Life

Timber is incredibly resilient to deterioration, especially hardwoods like teak, Ipe, and oak. Wood decking has a long lifespan if treated and maintained correctly. It is resistant to breaking and splintering & can tolerate high foot activity, making it an excellent choice for long-term use.

Ecological viability

Because many varieties of timber decking come from sustainable forests, it's an environmentally beneficial option. Wood is a renewable resource that can be ethically harvested with the right handling. Your decking project will have less of an environmental impact if you use wood that is obtained sustainably.

Flexibility in Style

Decking made of timber offers great design freedom. Timber may be easily customised to match your concept. You can benefit from it whether you want to build a raised deck, or multi-level platform, or integrate it with additional features.

Maintenance Ease

Although it does require some maintenance to sustain its appearance and functionality, timber decking is often simple to clean and maintain. The wood will remain looking new and weatherproof with regular sealing, staining, and cleaning. Given their increased resistance to insects and deterioration, pressure-treated wood and softwoods require less maintenance than other types of wood.

Increased Property Appraisal

A well-thought-out wood deck can raise your home's worth. Because it expands the living area outside, it attracts the interest of prospective purchasers. Wood decking improves your home's overall attractiveness by adding both practical and decorative value.

Cosiness and Security

Compared to many other decking materials, timber is naturally colder to the touch, which makes it more comfortable to use barefoot in the summer. Furthermore, with regular maintenance, timber decking is less prone to becoming slippery. And it helps in lowering the possibility of accidents and making it a safer choice for families.

Which Timber Is The Best For Decking?

Ipe and Teak are the best materials for maximum endurance, but they are also very expensive. Merbau, pressure-treated pine, and cedar are suitable substitutes if you're searching for something more reasonably priced but still quite durable. The ideal wood for decking is determined by several variables, including environmental conditions, durability, and aesthetics. The following are some of the best wood choices for decking:

Ipe, or Brazilian walnut

It is naturally resistant to rot, deterioration, and insects, making it one of the most durable hardwoods available. It is very dense and, with the right care, can live for at least 50 years. Ipe has an opulent appearance because of its rich, dark brown colour and delicate grain patterns. But sometimes, due to its density, it can be difficult to deal with and is quite expensive.

Teak

Another extremely resilient hardwood that is impervious to rot, dampness, and insect damage is teak. Its inherent oiliness aids in its ability to ward against moisture and keep its integrity. If teak is not treated, its golden brown hue will weather to a silver-grey over time. It is durable, low-maintenance, and moisture-resistant, making it perfect for outdoor use. At the same time, it is pricey and needs to be oiled frequently to keep its golden colour.

Cumaru (Brazilian Teak)

Like Ipe, Cumaru is a solid hardwood with exceptional durability. It is not easily damaged by weathering, rot, or insects. It has a deep reddish-brown hue with pronounced grain patterns. Highly durable and less expensive than Ipe. Because of its density, installation may be challenging.

Merbau

Often used in Australia and Southeast Asia, Merbau is a hardwood with a high degree of durability. It resists deterioration and termites by nature. Merbau's appearance is a deep reddish-brown colour that changes with time. It has a low cost and is resistant to termites and the elements.

Cedar

Although a softwood, cedar is nonetheless comparatively robust for decking. Because of its inherent oils, it resists rot and insects. The smooth texture and gorgeous reddish-brown colour of cedar are striking. It is lightweight, simple to handle, and impervious to insects and rot.

Redwood

Redwood is another softwood that has an innate defence against insects, moisture, and rot. While it lasts a long time, it is not as strong as hardwoods like teak or ipe. If not cared for, the rich reddish-brown colour of redwood might eventually turn grey. With redwood decking, you can expect good moisture resistance, easy to work with, and attractive appearance. To maintain its colour, it needs to be stained and maintained frequently.

Pine, Pressure-Treated

Chemicals are applied to pressure-treated pine to prevent rot, deterioration, and insect infestation. Although it isn't as strong as hardwood, it lasts a long time considering the cost. When new, it has a pale greenish-brown appearance, although it can be painted or dyed. Frequent care is necessary to keep it from warping and splintering.

Balau (red or yellow)

Known for its resilience to severe weather, Balau is a dense hardwood that is widely used in Southeast Asia. Balau has a fine grain and smooth finish and is available in red or bright yellow tones. It is very durable and reasonably priced in comparison to other hardwoods. In certain areas, it may be challenging to source.

Jarrah Durability

Jarrah is an extremely resilient Australian hardwood that is impervious to weathering, rot, and insects. It's frequently utilised for decking and outdoor furnishings. Reddish-brown in hue, with a beautiful grain that deepens over time. But it could be pricey and sometimes difficult to locate outside of Australia.

Stung Gum

Another Australian hardwood, spotted gum, is resistant to termites and severe weather. It has a beautiful spectrum of hues, from pale brown to dark chocolate, and frequently has a wavy grain. Termite resistance, long-lasting, and exquisite beauty. There might not be as much availability outside of Australia.

We are hoping to change the front entrance of our home. We will be moving the front door from the side of the home to the front of the home and would like a deck that is 6900mm X 2500mm that leads to the new door. It would sit roughly 400-500mm off the ground - a few entrance steps will be needed. We were thinking of using treated pine. We were originally going to tackle this ourselves but have become a bit overwhelmed. Would love someone to come out and give us a quote on how much the deck would cost to build. Husband is also on leave and would love to learn/assist in the building of this. Thanks heaps!
